Pre-Raphaelite Portrait of a Young Girl in Black

£225.00

Description

Circle Lord Frederick Leighton (1830-1896)

Victorian period oil painting that bears the monogram for the famous British Pre-Raphaelite artist Lord Frederick Leighton 1830-96. The signature, top left, blacklights well and does not appear to be a later addition. Very interesting piece, though sadly somewhat over-cleaned in the past. This has resulted in a loss of detail to the hair and clothes and some small areas of the face. Leighton was an eminent British painter of the Victorian era and interestingly rather sadly holds the record for the bearer of the shortest lived peerage in history; after only one day his hereditary peerage ended with his death.
Upon closer examination with UV light there is overpaint to the hair and paint disturbances to the shawl. It is framed in a later heavy gallery frame, some scuffs in places.
