Oil on Canvas
An original canvas by British artist, Edward Holland. Glasgow born painter based in Southampton. Holland ran the first modern art gallery in Southampton and painted murals on buildings throughout the city. This picture may date from the fifties or earlier. It shows Holland’s interest in British Surrealism with flashes of Henry Moore’s approach to the human figure. Painted in oil the picture is signed to left hand corner.
During the Second World War Eddie served in the Home Guard and his talents were put to good use painting information posters.
After the war he forged a career painting signs for shops and restaurants. Much of his work has vanished along with the businesses they belonged to.
Surviving examples include his interior at Georgeās Restaurant in St Michael Street in Southampton.
Eddie was also known for setting up Southamptonās first ever modern art gallery in Portland Terrace in 1958.
