Description
`The Officer’ looks at how we are all witness to events in life and that sometimes our values are at odds with those further up the chain of command. This is a large format piece made with many individual layers of spray-paint and screenprinting ink, built up one by one. Each colour swatch represents an individual layer.
The original photograph was taken by Arthur Fellig (Weegee) who worked as a photographer and photojournalist in and around New York in the 1930s and 40s, before heading out to Hollywood. I love the starkness of his images, the high contrast black and white, and glimpses into life at that time in the U.S. This image shows a white officer, surrounded by an African Americans victim and onlookers, like an overseer. It is a large format piece created on 84cm x 30cm 300gsm bright white card, using fade resistant paints. They are all individually hand stencilled, embossed and will be delivered sandwiched in tissue and rolled in a thick large diameter cardboard tube.
